Maurice the Dog makes a lot of fuss and that is not the first time. In that respect, for many he is the unbelievable figure who has already wrongly said 'Wolf!' shouted. As a result, he started at a disadvantage and had to make a lot of noise to get any attention at all. He is increasingly successful in this and indeed: the wolf is indeed there this time.
In the fight against the ineffective - not to say murderous - corona policy, I caught sight of Maurice during his first appearance on the TV talk show Op1. He had a theory about outbreaks being caused by certain humidity - at least that's what stuck with me. Too complicated and not appealing for such a talk show. That discussion has now shifted to droplets versus floating microdroplets, which is more understandable. When looking back at that broadcast Maurice had already completed the hypothesis, but the narrative was not yet correct. If he had then focused on aerosols and 'inside versus outside', he could have made a better first move. Save those humidity levels (relative vs. specific) for the critical questions.
Critical journalism did its best so try to explain something to that:

Sindsdien is Maurice door de 'mainstream' media geweerd. Hij is twee maanden later (Ab Osterhuis zit er zowat dagelijks/wekelijks!) weer bij Op1 geweest maar hij kreeg toen geen gelegenheid voor een uiteenzetting. en 1x bij Beau die afsloot met het dodelijke "Ik ben niet overtuigd". Het zou ook gek zijn als je je in een paar minuten zou laten overtuigen. Je bent immers al maanden bezig om met hart en ziel het regeringsbeleid te propageren terwijl dat veel onnodig lijden en sterfte veroorzaakt. Om dat te beseffen heb je meer tijd nodig. De spijt komt nog wel.
At Beau's house, Maurice sat together with two other intelligent, critical and concerned minds who crushed their credibility with a few blatant unscientific statements. It only needs to be a few to undermine a meaningful story. Maurice was unfortunately dragged into that fall. As if there were three alu hats in a row.
Maurice strikes back
De kritiek op Maurice is tweeërlei: hij is geen "deskundige" en (dus) zijn zijn uitspraken niet gestoeld op wetenschap. De misvatting daarin ligt in het feit dat een deskundige uitgaat van zijn kennis en een wetenschapper blijft onderzoeken. Maurice is in die zin een betere vertegenwoordiger van de wetenschap.
De wedervraag aan het RIVM was: "Op welke wetenschap is de anderhalvemeter samenleving dan gestoeld?" Dat bleek nota bene een vuistregel te zijn uit een handboek uit de jaren 30, waar geen enkele deskundige sindsdien reden heeft gehad om aan te twijfelen. Dat het RIVM zo'n onderbouwing voor zichzelf accepteert spreekt al boekdelen over het meten met verschillende maten en de starre tunnelvisie waar ze zich aan vastklampen.
However, a scientist like Maurice de Hond does see reason to doubt this. He himself goes looking for the source cited by the RIVM experts. In that standard work of medical science, a medical handbook by W.F. Wells in which, among other things, the behavior of large droplets is described. Maurice de Hond manages to dig up that book and digs through it. The main theme of that book is:
Droplet infections are primarily airborne: airborne epidemics are absent from an ecological population with adequate air hygiene".
Airborne droplets: Aerosols, in other words, where epidemics can be prevented by good ventilation.
